Easy Sustainable Living Tips To Being Green

Another year has come to a close, and now many of us are looking to turn over a new leaf. In 2011, consider making a few small changes in your living habits to positively impact the environment. To get you moving in the right direction, here are a few tips to living a more sustainable lifestyle in the New Year:

If you are a coffee drinker, use old coffee grounds as a natural fertilizer for houseplants or as a part of your compost pile. As coffee grounds decompose, they add nutrients to the soil and give your morning ritual a little more meaning.

Live in a chilly locale? If you’re up for the challenge, pull out your sweater and turn down the thermostat. By turning down your heat a few degrees, you can save some money and help the planet at the same time.

Pack your lunch in a reusable lunch bag or container. There are plenty of companies that make attractive eco-friendly alternatives to the old brown bag, letting you save a little with each meal.

Don’t throw away all that junk mail! You can call companies to be removed from future mailings, and in the mean time, turn plain waste paper into compost or art projects.

Want to save a little green? Keep your fridge and freezer full to cut down on energy use. A full fridge stays cool more efficiently, meaning less energy to keep temperatures constant.

Opt for cloth shower liners instead of traditional plastic ones. They are attractive, can be washed repeatedly, and allow you to cut down on the volatile compounds you breathe in from plastics.

When you’re finished recharging electronic devices like computers, cell phones or mp3 players, unplug the charger. Leaving cords plugged in to outlets when not in use will waste unnecessary energy.

There’s no business like snow business! Retire your snow blower and opt for a little manual labor by shoveling your walkway. Burn calories instead of fossil fuels for a healthier planet and a healthier you.

We know it can seem like a challenge to change your lifestyle for a greener tomorrow, but with the dedication to want to live a more sustainable lifestyle, you’ll find that it’s really easy being green.
